Question: here in central Indiana, we must stop feeding the hummers by mid-October so as not to delay their migration south. Otherwise they will starve if they start too late (not enough food left en route).
On behalf of a friend in the Tampa area, I am asking if there is a 'stop feeding' time in that area of Florida?
Thanks,
LH

Lauren,
There is no "stop feeding time" throughout Florida.
I live just east of Tampa and I feed them all year. They're uncommon in my yard during the summer but are regulars in a friend's yard a couple of miles away. I've been hosting as many as 20 hummers during the winter months for the past few years while my friend seldom sees wintering birds. They can be very local. Landscape for them and offer feeders and eventually most get lucky. Hanging feeders after a freeze may help neighboring birds who've lost flowers. I usually see my numbers increase after a freeze.

Lauren, my Aunt lives in Columbus In, she was still feeding Hb's into early Nov 2009. I would think leaving up the feeders might save some late travlers. Checkout The Hummingbird Forum www.network54.com/forum/439743/Steve in Martinsville posts woderful pictures. Jana
