I just saw a very small brownish hummingbird for the first time on the Florida West Coast in Englewood. Not sure when you saw it but "brownish" is pretty vague! Most FL hummingbirds are Ruby-throated which have green backs and white colored bellies. Males also have a red throat that in poor light might look black. If you observed it at dawn or very early in the morning it may have been a sphinx moth which is easily misidentified as a hummingbird and is most often brownish to the eye. Might have been a hummer but it might have been a sphinx "look alike". Keep an eye out because the hummers will be returning in the next few months.
