Hi! I live in Melbourne and spotted the first hummingbird I've ever seen here last week - 2 days after Hurricane Matthew. Today, Sunday, Oct. 17 I saw him again. I have some Firebush planted in the backyard, which is where he's been hanging out. Early this AM I put a feeder up, but haven't seen him around it yet.

Michele, don't be discouraged if the hummer doesn't find or use your feeder when you first hang it out. Sometime it takes awhile for the feeder to be recognized as a food source. Here in FL you needn't fill the feeder, just about 3-4 oz. is enough! No point in wasting it since after 3-4 days the solution goes bad and it should be changed along with a good feeder rinse. Nice to know you have a hummer and the hummers appearance may well be a result of Matthew's winds driving it in your direction. Severe weather events like Hurricanes and extreme cold front's are often responsible for hummers appearing in our yards, especially in the fall and early winter.
