Hi! Last night around9 PM I took the dogs out for a walk and there was a hummingbird buzzing around my potted flowers. It was very tame in that the proximity of the dogs did not seem to disturb it at all. I am very familiar with Ruby Throats, but this one was different. It seemed to be tannish in color and perhaps a little smaller than a Ruby Throat. I live in Polk County if that helps.

It sounds like you're describing a sphinx moth. It's a common mistake because they act so much like hummingbirds and are usually observed in low light. The movements say hummingbird but they lack a bill and tail and have antennae. Check out the last board on this site at floridahummingbirds.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=moths for more photos of sphinx moths. I encourage others to post photos and/or reports of these moths on that board. Steve
