Happy Holidays, fellow hummingbirders! I moved into a new house this past fall....St. Petersbug Florida. The backyard where I saw hummers last August has a large grove of fire spike plants. Now that it's winter, most of last years bloom spikes have withered away...my question, when should I prune off the depleted bloom spikes to ensure a healthy crop of flowers for the upcoming year....now or wait until later in the spring??

I am assuming its a red color fire spoke, correct? If it is and you are no longer getting flowers, I would dead head it. I wouldn't cut the green part of the plant in case we do get cold weather.
My purple firespike is starting to bloom now and the hummers love it in the winter. I was recently given some cuttings of another color purple one - more red purple than the light purple one and it is getting spikes on it as well. Anxious to see if the hummers like it as well.
