Hi--I've checked this site off and on for months and finally decided to join. Am going to put up my feeders the first of next week even though it's in the 50's here, but should warm up soon. I knew nothing about Hummingbirds until last summer when I saw one in my backyard and was stunned.
I quickly put up a feeder then found a better one at Amazon and soon had a family of ruby throated hummingbirds guarding the feeder. I even ran out and bout salvia and several fire cracker bushes. I deduced that they had a nest in a tree that was next to the feeder. The best part--still hard for me to believe, but got my husband to verify--was baby birds flying around in circles for at least an hour one afternoon in August. Am pretty sure it was August (see your point about making notes now). I think there were about three babies flying very erratically in circles over my back yard. It took awhile for me to figure out what they were--so small and jerky flying. That was amazing and so exciting. Anyway, I live in Jacksonville and by the end of Sept. they were gone. Hope to see them again.
