Had my first severe window strike of the summer here in MA. First one that resulted in dropping a hummer to the ground after a head on collision while being chased by another hummer. Ran out front and carefully picked him up, an immature male Ruby-throated. Held him for awhile trying to determine if he was just stunned or possibly worse (broken neck or wing). Watched him for about 5 min and noticed he had opened an eye and moved his head slightly but that was about it. For another 5 min. he only moved ever so little but still a good sign and also a good heart beat. Although he wouldn't drink any sugar solution. After 15 min. I was about to put him in a brown bag to induce him to rest (torpor). But he started moving more as if to escape my hand so I went outside to see if he would fly. After looking left and right and hearing another hummer chirping he flew up onto a hemlock branch. Happy ending to what was initially a very sad sound and sight. Joe M. Sturbridge, MA Attachments:
