A young male Black-chinned Hummingbird was first observed in my Valrico yard on December 24th. I was able to video it today and confirm the id. I posted a video to the Report non-Ruby-throated Sitings at floridahummingbirds.proboards.com/thread/816/chinned-hummingbird-valrico-hillsborough-county. Here's another video of the bird: I've also got three Rufous and at least 5 Ruby-throateds in my yard. I videoed these two while waiting on the Black-chinned to return:

When I bought my camcorder, it was "expensive" at around $600. A better (more powerful) version can now be purchased for $200-300. I'm planning to replace my old camcorder soon. I'm looking for a camera/camcorder with a high optical zoom that is also high megapixel still camera. I was recently looking at a couple of them with up to 60x optical zooms that are also up to 20 mp still cameras. The drawback with what I've seen so for is that they don't offer a manual focus. I need to be able to manually focus on the bird because the autofocus usually sees the background and not small subjects like a hummingbird. I don't expect great clarity (like one would expect from an expensive DSLR) but if videos and photos are reasonably in focus, good results can be achieved with the cameras that I'm considering, good enough for YouTube and Facebook.

The new camera I got for Christmas the other day is the Canon Power Shot SX700HS. It's a far cry from an expensive professional camera but it's a big step up from what I've had before. So far I've only set it on auto for a few trial shots and the hummingbird I managed to catch in it yesterday, while not the greatest pictures, are the very first pictures I've ever taken of a hummingbird and I am just thrilled. It was overcast through a glass window and I was shaking so bad out of excitement that the focus through 30X xoom isn't all that crisp but...Hey, my first hummingbird picture! What kind of bird is it anyway (see other post)? I've assumed we had a female but upon zooming in it looks like a male with faded plumage?
