Hi last year we had a constant stream of hummingbirds through our yard in Shalimar, Okaloosa County, close to Choctawhatchee Bay.
This year, despite kerpingvthe feeders out and filled with clean feed, we haven't seen any.
are we just unlucky?

Martin, many factors are at play when trying to explain the absence or presence of hummers. Keeping a feeder filled is not in itself a reason to have or not have hummers around! If there just aren't any around you won't get any use and even if they are around they may not use the feeders but prefer to use natural flowers. Using a feeder does not come naturally for hummers, as its a learned experience. I don't recommend filling 8-16 oz. feeders 4-6 oz. is enough since we don't have enough hummers to empty large capacity feeders in 3 days before the solution goes bad, moldy and foul! Your wasting money since in our heat the solution should be changed at least twice a week and the feeders thoroughly rinsed and cleaned (without soap please). Its important to note that the coastal areas of the Gulf generally experience higher numbers of hummers Sep. to Mar. than the hot summer months, May-Sep. as a general rule.
