This post was moved to a new thread on a different board. As stated in the original message, the author was unsure where to post it. Since the identity of the bird is unknown, I've placed it on the General Discussion board. SB OMG!!!! I dont know where to post this because i have no idea what kind of hummingbird this was....sittling in my livingroom that faces Coopers Bayou (part of Tampa Bay) on Bayshore Blvd in Clearwater Fl and I saw out the glass doors what appeared to be a really big dragon fly. I kept looking and realized it was a tiny bird. The light wasn't good, but it looked greenish and when I got up to take a picture it had gone. (although I think it just now flew past my balcony) I have some palm trees and and some orchids bloomin but nothing red at all. I will now go get a hummingbird feeder! That was amazing!!! so my location is 1111 Bayshore Blvd. about a mile down from the spa at about 3:00 pm. Thanks!

nbjazmin,
You're most likely seeing a Ruby-throated hummingbird (green above, white below, possibly some red on the throat) but Rufous is also possible if you were to see any reddish brown. People have been seeing them for the past month. I saw my first of the season today.
Plant red tubular flowers and maintain at least one feeder in a area that you will observe often.

Ok, I've trawled around this (great) website for half an hour and I still don't understand where I input hummingbird sightings. I'm sure everyone else gets it, but I'm "old school" (paper and pencil). Anyway, I saw "if in doubt, post here" but I still can't figure out where "here" actually is or how to do it. Never mind. If anyone actually reads this, I've become a member and am happy to share my hummer sightings to aid the database. However, I've never seen any hummers in Spring, only in Autumn (or Fall, I'm an ex-Brit!) so can I add retro-sightings or do they have to be brand new ones? I'm happy to go back through my diary and give you all the dates, but I don't want to bother if the answer is "no thanks". P.S, "hello" to the Coopers Bayou resident, I used to live in Clearwater and often cycled by your place on the Pinellas Trail to Safety Harbor whilst birding. OK, thanks, bye for now.

dalo,
My original plan was to just post sightings on the "Report Ruby-throated Hummingbird Sightings" and "Report non-Ruby-throated Hummingbird Sightings" boards with subjects that included locations. Anyone can create a new topic so if your location is not already in a topic, create a new one. I felt that this would make "searching" records easiest. I wanted non-sighting reports and other discussions, including birds of unknown species, to be posted in the General Discussions board.
I soon realized that too much structure can be a bad thing. A number of issues led to discussions on the "wrong" boards from follow-up discussions of sightings merging into unrelated discussions to people not being sure where to post. I changed my attitude from "I'm going to move posts to the correct board" to "The important thing is that we're discussing hummingbirds and posting sightings".
The important aspect of sightings is to verify when and where they are being seen. My emphasis has always been on wintering hummingbirds since there is such a lack of public knowledge that they spend the winters here but where they breed is also important to share. Even migration reports are useful to some as I've recently heard from people who always hang a feeder in May but were surprised to see one in March.
I recently had a discussion with someone regarding this topic (where to post) and I planned to create a new introductory post discussing the growth of this forum (now one short of 250 members) and the need to change some of the general rules. One recommended change is to encourage creating new topics for new discussions instead of continuing on old topics since old topics with many posts require all of the posts to load before you get to the new one. There's a limit to the number of posts on a page so in some cases, you need to navigate through pages to find the newest posts.
My recommendation, once you've checked out the site, is to visit daily and click on the "View the 30 most recent posts of this forum" in the Forum Statistics area of the Info Center near the bottom of the page to view the newest posts.
My time has been very limited lately but I hope to eventually follow through with my plan to redefine the "rules".
