I just moved to Ft. Myers from IL and would like to start bird feeding. When is the best time to start feeding hummingbirds in Ft. Myers. Are they here all year  ? Thanks for this forum!  |

As they say, no better time than the present. That said, you may not see a bird right away. I believe that the birds are already where they plan to stay the winter. If they have an adequate food source, they may not move around to find yours. On the other hand, should they lose their source, either to the season or to added competition, they will greatly appreciate your offer.
Your best bet at seeing a hummingbird if there aren't any currently in your area would begin around late February. Birds migrate through between March and May. These birds may only stop once or for just a day or two but you may see a steady stream of them that appear to be one staying longer.
I would not expect that you would get one in your area between May and July but anything is possible.
They will be migrating back south between July and October and some may spend the winter.

I live in Lehigh Acres and I have had numerous humming birds, at least thats what I think they are, visiting my night blooming jasmine in the early and evening hours, all before sunup or sundown, since right before christmas. Since the last freeze my NBJ is down, but I purchased some verbena plants and they have been back. I am very confused as to which hummer this may be as they are tiny and dark colored. They don't seem to be bothered by my cats swatting them thru the screen, and they dissappear as soon as they arrive. I have not been succussful in getting a photo, but still trying. Any clue as to what this species may be? Also, they have been visiting for at least two years. Thank you, Sharon B in Lehigh Acres, Fl.
