I am reporting on the newly banded adult Rufous female in my yard. The banding went well on Thursday and the bird is still here and feeding consistently. For those interested she arrived in my yard January the 20th along with an adult female Ruby who did not stay. She has been the lone hummer here and seems to be in no hurry to start her migration.

We have lived in Polk County Florida for most of my life and we have never seen hummingbirds. I just read where you sited one in Lakeland. Is this unusual? or do you see lots of them every year? If you do, could you please tell me if its because you live out in a wooded area ? and if you do something to draw them to your yard? Thank you so much. Have been watching a webcam of one in CA. and was just telling them that we have no hummingbirds in central Florida where I am..of course they said that I should.. which just makes me feel even worse as I LOVE THEM! My 2 favorites are hummers and owls..( I KNOW..not a good combination!) thanks ahead of time.. Lynn Williams lynndw4771@aol.com

Is the Rufous still coming around, what part of Lakeland are you in? I am on the north side near north campbell and Kathleen road. I've saw a Ruby throat last year but only once.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Everyone.... I live in Davenport on HWy 27..Legacy Park
and I have a grayish looking Hummingbird visiting me every morning around 0715, how can you tell if it's a female or male? It does not like my Feeder much, but the red color must attract it and he loves my Fire bush, which I planted after I read this article about 3 years back, he didn't appear the first year..but now he or she has been coming back..I plant lots of red flowers just for a few moments of pleasure watching my little Hummer..where do they sleep though? They also like my Bottle brush when in bloom, and when I visited the Garden-center @ my Cagan Crossing's Walmart, they had a purple hanging plant(don't know the name), i seen 3 Hummers very close up and I was almost able to touch one..well I bought that plant, needless to say. Seeing a Hummingbird gives my Hope..I believe in that...Lol <3

Well just to let you know, my Rufous left on April 1, 2010. Now all I must do is wait till she returns. I am currently seeing at least one hummer per day. Unfortunately it is too early for my Rufous to return. I am not in the city but just south of clubhouse so still near enough. Yes, I actively plant for all forms of wildlife and hummers specifically. I also have two feeders out currently. The current hummers I see are Ruby-Throats and nectar at both the flowers and the feeders. Sorry for my absence but I got a job and am also now the President of the local Audubon (no time for myself)....
