I wanted to start this thread because I am curious if others living near me are seeing hummers, we may be even seeing the same ones. Today working in my yard, It was such great day! I have been seeing one hummer a day, but today I saw 2 together. It was awesome to see them on things I have planted. One went to two different firecracker ferns, then perched near on a little wire fence for like 15 sec, then fed on the tubie feeders in my little oak tree and then for like a min or more he sat in the tree and preened. Saw it quite a few times after also. Was a GREAT day! I pray God will give you the desire of your heart to see hummingbirds. Thanks for letting me share. Linda

Linda... It looks like a female RTH to me. Hopefully someone else will respond and confirm this.

Great pictures. I can never ID the RTHs but it is fun knowing more about your guests.

Still seeing the two maybe 3 they use all 7 feeders and feed off my dwarf firebush and firecracker fern. But my cypress vines, powder puff and queen of the nile have never bloomed. and I guess from the heat my fushia's have just about dried up. Attachments:

The hummingbird I saw yesterday was back this morning and also today at 1:30. Used the feeder. Not sure if its a ruby throat, but I'm thinking it is.

Have not saw any more hummingbirds since December. Still keeping my feeder up and changing the nectar every 3 or 4 days. I do have Gold finch, and either purple finch or house finch, not sure which, Cardinals, woodpecker and doves.

No hummers since Dec 18th, 2010, but have been seeing blue birds. Put a nest box up on a skinny pole with a predator guard, got meal worms to feed them. But no takers on the nest box yet.

Hummingbird231, I've seen bluebirds this early, but none have ever nested in a box here before the end of March and early April. I wonder if they will nest early because of the good weather. Having had bluebirds for three year now, I'm hoping they return again this year.
Good luck to you!!

3/26/11 Got a little hummingbird coming in my yard, it was here all weekend, saw it all throughout the day Sat. and Sun. using the little tube feeders and the ones stuck on the window, also at my cape honeysuckle and bottle brush tree. It was very tiny. Not sure what kind, but guessing Ruby.

ok, I think maybe i may have 3. Momma and 2 babies, cause i saw 2 with little bills at the same time on feeder and 1 with a long bill a little later. Got a video of the Momma, its very dark though, I will try to post a link. Are they just passing through? Wondering how long they will be here. Wish they could stay. O well, if is just for a day, I'll still be glad that I got to see them. So magnificent. www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1794683160790&comments

I hadn't seen a hummer in several weeks but last night at almost dark, I saw one at the feeder on my pergola. I ran to make new sugar water and got a clean feeder out. Hung it up but it was so dark I couldn't see if the hummer came to it or not. So this morning I made a point to be up and watching a little after 7. Within a few minutes, a female Ruby was there feeding. I changed out another feeder on the other side of the yard and have seen a hummer there as well. I am pretty certain its the same one. I am hoping it will hang around a few days at least. She sure seems hungry today so I don't know if it was just that the rain kept her from feeding on flowers yesterday or if she got blown in with the heavy rains. Either way I am glad she found my yard.

Wow thats great ;D. Are you North Lakeland also? I'm still seeing them too. I'm not sure but I think its two male Juvenile, and one Juvenile female now coming to my feeders and feeding on saliva, pentas, coral honeysuckle, firecracker fern, & cypress vine. I'm having to clean feeders and change the nectar every 3 days. I waited 4 days the last time and mold was in there, I don't want to make them sick. There was a female I think with a large bill but she has not been around. I've also noticed we have baby blue birds in our nest box.

That's great news about the bluebirds - never have seen one in my area. I am in south Lakeland off Hallam. I posted on another post that I ended up with 2 females and a male over the weekend. Am now only seeing the male. He is a beauty - adult male with gorgeous gorget.
At least one of the females fed all day Sunday - guess she was feeding up so she could move on. I'm not very good at finding them feeding on the flowers so I guess they still could be here.

New to this site-tons of good info. I've seen a few hummers in my yard over the years but had limited success w/ feeders. Put up a new one sat. and saw female RT within a few hours. Sun I sighted 2 male RT at feeders(put up 2nd sun am) One male kept returning to a bare branch in elm near feeder all day sun & mon. Saw him tues morn in same spot before rain, and as soon as the storm passed he was at the feeder again. very cool

Maybe they won't if they are mating. Several of us in south Lakeland are still seeing males and a couple have females as well. There is rising hope that maybe there are nesting areas around us.
Have been told in the past that May is the month we probably won't see them. However, thats getting close!

That would be so great if they stayed. I've been changing the feeder every 2 days because of the heat. I wish my yard was more shady. Once my shrubs & plants mature a little more, they will have plenty of food sources plus the feeders. Thanks for responding.

I'm still seeing male and female ruby every day, feeding from feeders, cypress vine, coral honeysuckle, red salvia. They like sitting in the oak, maple and bottlebrush trees.

Yesterday I saw 4 hummingbirds at one time. I cant believe we have had hummingbirds mostly year round. Also i have a question? Does anyone know if Root tone on cuttings coral honey suckle will work?

Any type of rooting hormone helps and I have used root tone with success. Will offer one suggestion. Put the root tone on after taking the cutting but wait about 24 hrs before planting the cutting and be careful of over watering the cutting. Damp but not soaking wet! Joe M. Lakeland
