Hi to all from Miami - Have noticed hummers in my yard for the last 3 years. I summer in Montana ( with lots of hummers) and return to Miami the 1st of October. Have seen ruby throats since returning this year - at least 4 today and maybe 7. They seem to leave in late March or are nesting - I don't know which but I do not see any more prior to leaving in mid May. I have 2 hanging feeders and many plants in the yard that they love. Yard has fire bush, shrimp plants, bromeliads with bloom spikes, firespike, hibiscus, cape honeysuckle, powderpuff tree and HongKong orchid tree. They also seem to like my big oak trees and Royal Palm seed pods. I also own a plant nursery in Homestead and see numerous hummers around the hibiscus bushes and again the cape honeysuckle, oleander and duranta sapphire.
Would love to have my birds banded if the opportunity ever presented itself.
