Today I can check off one of my life list items. Today at 8:00 am I saw my FIRST hummingbird that was NOT in a zoo of some sort.
After 5 years of nurturing my suburban butterfly garden (which actually wraps the whole house) I have FINALLY attracted a hummingbird. I got goosebumps when I first saw him and realized what he/she was. The hummer was busy nectaring on the same flowers my spot-breasted orioles visit nearly daily. I only hope he stays around for a few days at least so I can get my binoculars on him for possible identification as to what species he is. All I could tell for sure today was that he has an irridescent emerald green rump area and appears somewhat brown/tan also. I am so happy and am telling everyone I SAW A HUMMINGBIRD IN MY YARD!!
Details on location are: City of Sunrise near the Sunrise Athletic Center Park.

I have an office in Hollywood, Florida about 1 mile West of I-95 off of Stirling Road. The office is in a small, single family house and is nestled in an area w/ lots of old growth oak trees. In 2005, I planted a large area of the yard w/ cranberry colored Pentas. After Hurricane Wilma struck in October, 2005, I noticed we had a hummingbird feeding off of the Pentas. I added several feeders and we enjoyed watching her feed all winter. She left sometime in March, 2006. She has returned to us every winder since then. I assume it is the same bird. I believe she is a female ruby red throat. This year, we have 2 more birds feeding at the house. I do not know the species because they move so fast I have not gotten a good look at them. They really enjoy the firebush in our front yard.
