With freezing temperatures being predicted for much of the state, now is the time to hang feeders. With the loss of flowers due to frost or freeze, the hummingbirds will be looking for alternative sources of food. Any hummers in the neighborhood will flock to the yard with feeders.

Steve - With the freezing temps., should we replace the solution after a freeze or is it still ok when it freezes and thaws out frequently.

I am in Polk County. The water in my birdbath was frozen this morning...but the sugar water in my hummingbird feeders didn't freeze. I don't think that the sugar water froze any last winter either. Maybe the sugar lowers the temperature at which the water freezes? I've heard you can purchase heaters for hummingbird feeders.

My hummers were frequent visitors to the feeders today.

It should still be okay after freezing and thawing but it's always better to change the solution early rather than too late.
I had one feeder freeze this morning. It was on the west side of the house next to a Russelia sarmentosa whose stems were coated in ice this morning. It must be the cold spot in my yard.

I know what happens to the little hummers when it gets to cold for them..going catatonic. What happens when we have a heavy burn, such as what is coming out of Lochalossa toward Gainesville?

I would assume since hummingbirds can fly that they would escape the fire but then, like after a freeze, they would need to find a new food source. Time to hang feeders.
