We saw this little hummingbird this morning, Dec. 15, 2010 at 8:52 am. She fed a long time, then just sat on the feeder, resting and warming up in the sun. She looked exhausted. We hope she'll stick around. We have had sightings in our yard for several years, and posted them here. This is our first hummer sighting since August or September 2010. We have hung a total of 8 feeders. We're not sure if she is a Ruby, but we think she is. We think the lowest temperature in our yard last night was 27 degrees. 4:1 sugar water freezes at 26/27 degrees, so the feeding solution was fine when the little bird got there this morning. Most of our feeders are the 3 oz planter box kind without any place for the cold little birds to sit, and we were glad that we used two these larger feeders that gave the hummer a place to rest. Two of these feeders are hung just on the other side of our screened patio -- and this picture was taken through that screen while we were still inside the house jumping up and down -- "Look, look, a little hummer!" We are located west of US Hwy 301 about a mile south of the Progress/Bloomingdale intersection. Riverview is about 12 miles south of the Tampa, and near Brandon. Attachments:

How exciting!!! I think I will move mine into the full sunny areas around the yard so they will receive the morning sun.

BH, we have some feeders in the full sun, and some in the shade. I think that for the time being at least, I am going to move them all into the full sun but keep them as close to their original positions as possible.

Today we had an adult mail RTH at another feeder. Our sightings so far are: two female RTH and one adult male. We hope they will all stick around for awhile! We weren't hit too hard by the freezes and so we still have a lot of blooms in our yard.

We watched for several hours today, but only sighted the one male RTH.

Just posting an update:
We currently have a number of ruby throated hummers in our yard, but we aren't able to tell exactly how many. We have 9 feeders up now. We have at least one male ruby throated, and at least two female ruby throateds. A couple of days ago we had two males, two females.
We had our first Rufous sighting today in our yard. We were thrilled! I posted it in the Non-Ruby thread.
