hi, i'm new to the board, excited about seeing all the hummingbird enthusiasts. i've had a male rubythroated for 5 years now, he stays all year. just this summer, i noticed a female, and she has stayed this winter. i hope they like each other enough to make some little hummingbirds next year. their favorite plants are the firespike and firebush in my backyard. after several years with no luck, i finally was able to lure them to my feeder. i actually think it was the female who found it first. of course! i have a question: is it ok to change the sugar water just once a week? i travel alot, and it's hard to change it more frequently. but i don't want to poison my birds. thx for the answers

Probably not critical during the cooler winters. However if you use a 'premixed' red, it won't make it a week without souring in central and south FL. The risk of soured water is that a weakened bird will drink it regardless with bad effect. A healthy bird will normally not take more than a taste and then be reluctant to visit the feeder again, probably never! Joe M. Lakeland, FL

Hi, I am in Lutz. I have a Ruby throated male and female here all year round. I make my own mix and change it out about every three days. Although untill the freeze they were happy feeding on the flowers
