Geoff,
There will be hummingbirds in Florida but many of them will be migrants. They can often be found with other migrating species along the Gulf Coast.
What parts of Florida will you be visiting?
You may need to ask again, closer to your arrival. Perhaps someone will know of a local breeding bird by then. I've had wintering birds stay as late as mid-May but nothing is guaranteed at this point.

Lots of people say that Fort DeSoto park is the place to be about the middle of April for seeing lots of migratory birds. Don't know if a week later is as good. Neighbor says he has seen hummers during that time.

Around Xmas, I can pretty much guarantee that they'll be in my yard. This past year I had Ruby-throateds, a Rufous and a Black-chinned at Xmas. In April, the odds are pretty good that one will be at Ft. Desoto. Steve Hummingbirds in Florida on Facebook: www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=106975792655351

osprey66, If you are here in FL during the Christmas period this year I will almost guarantee at least a half dozen birds to photograph, in my back yard. Steve's yard is also a great place for photographs, and he will also most assuredly have them at that time. So you have some options and you 'will' see hummers, in Dec. here in FL, which of course are not found in the UK. (But I did have a guest from the UK that was absolutly sure that Hummingbirds were common in the UK, never could change her mind!) Joe M. Lakeland, FL

Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales (not far from Kissimmee) usually has hummingbirds. I was visiting there yesterday and saw a hummingbird feeding on the salvias and snap dragons. The web site is BokTowerGardens.org
We live in Riverview and have had at least three hummingbirds in our yard since the December freezes: a Ruby Throated female, a Black Chin male, and a male Rufus.
Hope you enjoy your trip to Florida!

Greatings UK visiter (I'm from UK originally - East Anglia). I've not yet seen a Spring hummer where I live on the west-coast of Florida, so I can't help you with that. But if you're going to Kissimmee, you might want to check out the Lake Kissimmee airboat ride. You won't see any hummers there either (I don't think) but I had a blast [pun intended] when I was there. Saw my first Purple Gallinule there (if you're into a variety of birds).

Another vote for Bok Tower. I saw 2 there last November. As for other birds, I'm not sure they're still there but I finally got to see a painted bunting at Bok a few weeks ago. There were several females and one VERY camera shy male. There's a feeder just to the right of the gift shop that they like. Come to think of it, that was also the area I saw the hummingbirds. Just wanted to add... if you're in the Bok Tower area, don't miss the Circle B Bar Reserve in Lakeland. www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/recreation/areas/circlebbarreserve.htmlYou may not see any hummers but there is still a wide diversity of bird life. You never know what you might see. I try and get there at least once a week.

I live in Tallahassee, I have had mating hummingbirds with nests. I have forgotten when to take down the feeders. Who can tell me?

Claire, In one word, never! Tallahassee has been noted for the appearance of 'Western' species in the winter months so I would say it's not necessary to take down your feeders. Here in central FL we seem to be noticing more 'over-wintering hummer activity as folks realize that they are here and present during the winter months. The same applies to all areas within 75-100 miles of the Gulf. Joe M. Sturbridge, MA
