We saw a hummer hovering at the fire spike bush, but it ignored the blossoms and instead studied the wrought iron hook which typically holds the feeder. The feeder was not there.
First sighting in nearly 2 years. Was this a "scout"?
The most we've ever seen was 2 birds at the same time. This past year or more they were absent, yet we have fire spike and glory bower where we can watch, plus feeders. Note, last 2 winters were very cold, and we got a cold blast right off the Peace River.

Not a scout! You have a hummer that has fed from either your feeder previously or from a feeder hung from the same type of hook arrangement. Hummers have an uncanny ability to remember where they have found a food source in the past and will return to the same spot year after year. Joe M. Sturbridge, MA

Forgot to mention, put the feeder back up before he looks for another food source.
