After living in Live Oak, FL for a year and keeping a feeder out on my porch almost the entire time, I moved. Mind you, I only moved about 1/4 mile away. Of course I took down the feeder at the old place and yesterday morning, as I had almost finished unpacking, I was taking a break, drinking coffee on the covered deck when a good sized Ruby throated male came flying by. I was pleased that he actually stopped, turned around and flew back towards where I was sitting. He stopped and hovered about 10 feet away and then zoomed in right at me, startling me a bit, stopping a mere 3 feet from my face. He then proceeded to scold me severely with his little high pitched voice, that I recognize hearing when males duel for feeder rights. I heard myself say "ok, ok", at which time he zipped away to about 10 feet away again, stopped, turned around and had a few more choice words with me. I guess he had to have the last word. I went inside and found the feeder, unpacked and filled it and it now hangs under the deck. I guess he recognized me. Just thought I'd share this as it kind of made my day..........

Funny that it happened, most of my hummers have gone, but still have 2 left, they greet me every morning, hover at the screen, say good morning, feed and go to their perch. love their attention,

Aren't they a riot?! I was trying to hide myself near the feeder the other day to get a good photo. The male that's been out there flew by and then came over hovering right in front of me. He looked at me like he was thinking, you didn't really think I'd miss you and then promptly took off.

I have had them fly at me, buzz me in the garden when I am trying to weed it and look me in the face also. Made me question if these actions were intentional or if I was crazy.

Their actions were very normal and very common. You are in their 'territory' and therefore they challenge or investigate any intruders. You may not think of yourself as an intruder but the Hummer does. Not to worry as he or she will become accustomed to your presence and in a day or two ignore your presence, except when your taking down a feeder to clean and replace the sugar solution. My experience is that they will always check to see what your doing with their food source. Joe M. Lakeland
