not the best of weather to think of sitting outside by the shrimp plant bush but it was worth it to think and do. about a week ago i saw my first black chinned humming bird for the first time to know it. only saw it once but it rested in the barren golden rain tree for several minutes. this evening i saw it or another while hunkered down in my yard chair with my back to the wind. it lit on a crepe myrtle about 12 ft. from me and i waited for 5 min. for it to come on down and feed so i could see what it was. it was in the shade and back lit by the sky so i thought it was a female rt that was all fluffed out. got impatient and sneaked up my binoculars and then i could see it was a bc. after a good look, i went back to my book and soon it came down and began to feed. i had stationed myself on the upwind end of the shrimp plant and it feed on the downwind end so i never got a pic. it flew up into a large oak tree to survey it's kingdom. it later flew down to feed at an azalea plant [moving quickly from blossom to blossom] i think to eat insects. i've never found nectar in those blossoms. then back to his high oak throne. his whole visit was probably half an hour. the florida born blood gave up on the freezing weather [wind chill down to 57+-] and went inside and made a cuppa.

Any particular identifying characteristics that would confirm your Hummer as a Black-chinned? If he/she is around for a few days I would like to drop by and take a few photos?
