I live in Palm Beach Gardens where we have Ruby Throats in the winter - they usually arrive at the end of September and stay till February/March. Today I saw one feeding from my red firespike - I have never seen one in July before!

It is July 23 and I saw another Ruby Throat this morning, feeding from my Salvia "Limelight". Are they migrating south already?

It is my personal thought that we are having more "resident" Ruby-throateds here in Florida. I have two friends who have had females now for two years. They see males sporadically but they know for a fact that the females are staying and feeding throughout the year. I saw my first female or juvenile last week - usually it is late Aug. before I see migrants. Who knows why? Wish they could tell us!

Thanks for your input, moboston. Where exactly in Florida do your friends have Ruby Throats all year? I saw another one(perhaps it is the same bird) this morning, feeding from my Salvia madrenesis and also my Salvia "Wendy's Wish". The Salvias seem to be popular.
