I have had a Ruby-throated around for about a week now but could never tell if it was an immature or a female. Well, yesterday morning about 8 am, I watched it fly around nectaring on lots of different flowers. It will not use the feeders or land in the trees for very long. This time though, there were a number of little tweety birds in the Crepe Myrtle and this hummer decided to put on a show. Perhaps there was another hummer in the tree that I didn't see but this guy did the typical U-shaped display above the CM tree and then dropped down and did the shuttle display in front of the CM tree. I am assuming since it is not breeding season, that he was just practicing his technique or perhaps he was confused as to the species of tweety birds in the CM tree. Anyway, until I read up on it, I wasn't convinced of what I saw. Then this morning, he came up to the Porterweed in front of my window and I got to see a small patch of orangish red gorget. I hope he learns to use the feeders and stay with me for the winter. My adult male that was here when we got back from Maine, has left so the only one I know I have is this little guy.
Hoping my Rufous of three seasons returns to show herself. Last year she showed up on the 29th - the earliest yet for her. Maybe she will be here soon.
