Today I saw a hummingbird investigating the flowers (crossvine, papaya, red hibiscus) near my trellis. The bird had no distinctive markings that I could see, other than being greenish (I was about 12 feet away) so I'm guessing it was a female ruby-throated. I watched her for probably a couple minutes before she disappeared; I thought I might have heard her after that, but didn't see her again. I'll keep watching! My house is about five blocks from Lemon Bay, in the "Old Englewood" area. I've lived in Englewood for twelve years, and this is the first time I've seen a hummingbird here! I used to see them all the time in CA... I've really missed them! Three years ago I began xeriscaping my yard, getting rid of the lawn and planting both native and non-native plants; since then, I've seen a big increase in the number of butterflies, especially this year... but I never thought I'd see a hummingbird! I am VERY excited!!
