Having seen and heard 2 hummingbirds chasing during late afternoon. Put up a hummingbird feeder and had one drinking within one day. Birds first spotted on August 9, 2009. Not sure of gender; but have not seen or heard birds for one day. Do these birds winter here?

Ginger, I can't say that they are common in Largo in the winter but I do know that there has been at least one or two reported wintering from one individual in each of the past 2 or 3 years. The best advise I can give is to landscape for them, provide feeders, and hope for a little luck.
You may be seeing migrants that will leave shortly but hopefully you'll continue to see hummingbirds as others will be passing through throughout the next couple of months. You may also be lucky and the birds you're seeing could be early migrants that will choose to stay the winter. That's part of this purpose of this site, to try to learn when resident birds arrive and depart as well as the patterns of migrants.
