This is my first post on this forum. Today at 9:45 am I saw our first ruby-throated hummingbird for this season. Since I didn't see a ruby throat but only the emerald green, I assume it was a female or immature one. She sipped from a red penta and a coral honeysuckle bloom before speeding away. We live next to a conservation easement of oak and bay trees in East Orlando not too far from the Little Econ River. We usually see ruby-throated hummingbirds from April/May to September/October. I am very happy and hope to have more sightings soon. I've been on the lookout and eagerly awaiting since I have a number of blooms from coral honeysuckle I planted by a trellis last year. I also have tall and standard red pentas, firecracker plant, candycorn cuphea, red geranium (not sure if it attracts hummingbirds), red calibrachoa, cape honeysuckle in a pot (which I will not plant in yard because it is an aggressive grower) and other flowers blooming. I hope to hear of sightings from others in central Florida.
