Fred Bassett started his morning in my yard today. Lots of hummingbird activity while we were setting up. I set up in the backyard and Fred was in the front. I quickly caught the first one, a second year male Ruby-throat while Fred was still setting up the second cage. Then I caught a second second year male Ruby-throat before he could get started with the first. I then caught one of the female Rufous as Fred was finishing up with the second Ruby-throat. When we got back to the cage, it was empty. Cage malfunction. The backyard suddenly became quiet. Once I quit distracting him, Fred caught two more second year Ruby-throated Hummingbirds to finish the days banding.
Four second year male Ruby-throats. We missed the two female Rufous. I'd had a regular first year male Rufous up until a month ago. He was last seen two weeks ago. And, I had been seeing at least two adult male Ruby-throats. I considered it a miss of six birds.
A short time after Fred left, I found the male Rufous in the yard. I assume he was the Rufous that flew from the back to the front and then down the road a few yards just before Fred left. I shot this video before he left again.

Since I was out with the video camera, I decided to try to document the birds we missed. This is a video of six of the birds we missed. It's not great. And, there is a lot of road noise. There is also an adult male Ruby-throat with a damaged bill. Fred marked each of the banded birds with a pink head stripe. The birds in this video are all lacking that stripe.

Fred banded 2 Calliopes in Gainesville on Sunday, including one adult male. He finished Sunday catching a female Calliope in Lutz (north Tampa) a first in the county. He left my yard and headed to Lakeland.
