I have seen female ruby-throated hummingbirds in my yard at my firebush and feeders the last three weekends. Are these birds just passing through en route during migration or can I expect them to stay the winter?

We're nearing the end of "fall migration". Some birds have already reached their winter homes while others may still pass through. Some birds that appear to be settled in for the winter may still leave later time due to loss of their food source through increased competition by newly arrived birds or weather events.

Some of the hummers will spend the winter depending on your location, and available food sources. I usually can count on the hummers that are still around in Nov. to stay through the winter. This fellow showed up a few days ago and still has not been seen using a feeder. I suspect he will since there are three other adults using feeders so he will probably figure it out as well, but not all hummers do! Joe M. Lakeland
