I visited a yard in Lutz this morning and took the following photo. I believe this is the first Buff-bellied to be reported in Hillsborough County. Steve

This is the second year I have had a buff bellied hummingbird. I assume it is the same bird. Last year we took videos and pictures. The chatter it makes is unique, with its larger size and red at base of the bill convinces me this is the species. Last year it stayed the winter. It primarily feeds at feeder preferring cheap small plastic ones from big lots. It perches in the tall bushes surrounding the feeder. I have lots of tubular red flowers. The ruby throats seldom come to the feeders preferring the flowers. Location is not far from lake Thonotosassa in Hillsborough county. My husband posted information on eBird last year but I guess because of its extreme rarity parts of it was removed. I’m posting this information to let birders know that the species is present. Last year I noticed it after September hurricane in the gulf. I sometimes wonder if that is how it made it to my house.

Had the good fortune of logging a Buff-bellied in Lutz about 15 yrs ago. E-bird should have accepted your sighting of you attached a photo. They accept rarities if confirmed. Please consider contacting Fred Bassett, if it stays around since he will be banding here in central FL, Jan. 18-19. Fhound@aol.com
