OK, I thought I had a smidgin of knowledge regards hummers but now I know I lack the most basic knowledge. First, I live in Ormond by the Sea, FL. I've seen few hummingbirds over the last few years but think if I put out a feeder I'll attract them, so what is the PROPER formula for sugar in water to be put into the feeder? Additonally, I've planted firecracker bushes and Florida Flame around the property hoping these will enhance chances of attracting hummingbirds. Right or wrong idea?

Lou,
Use the traditional 4:1 mix, 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. For one or two feeders, I'd dissolve 1/4 cup of sugar in hot/boiling water. Heat the water to help dissolve the sugar easier. Use just enough solution in the feeder to be able to monitor the clarity and level of the solution. Store the remainder in the refrigerator. Change out the solution often, every 2-3 days, rinsing the feeder in hot tap water. Regular cleaning of the feeder should eliminate the need for chemicals like detergents and bleach.
Yes, any flowers, especially red tubular ones, will help to attract hummingbirds.
Good luck,
Steve
