right before dark tonight,my husband and I saw 2 very very small hummingbirds (no longer than 1 to 1.5 inch) feeding in our Vinca flowers, lantana & bottle brush. They appeared to resemble bumble bees and stayed for 3 minutes...less than a foot away from us. We have many hummingbirds daily but have never seen these tiny birds! What kind are they? Could they be babies???

Steve I got another great look at one tonight! Thanks for directing me to the Sphinx Moth pix. That is exactly what I saw. Is this Moth in the Hummingbird family? Thanks. Joy

Joy,
The sphinx moth is actually an insect. A close look will reveal a soft curled proboscis instead of a bill, six legs, and antennae. But, they sure fly like a hummer. They're not birds but still neat to watch.
